The Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) is the government agency responsible for setting and enforcing quality standards for imported and domestically manufactured products in Nigeria. To ensure that regulated products comply with the country's technical standards or other international standards that have been approved for implementation, and protect Nigerian consumers from unsafe or non-compliant products, the National Bureau of Standards of Nigeria has decided to implement regulated products exported to the country. Mandatory conformity assessment procedure (hereinafter referred to as SONCAP) before shipment.
SONCAP consists of two phases. The first phase is called "Product Certification" and only applies to the first export of a specific category of regulated products to Nigeria. Exporters who have passed product certification can obtain a "Product Certificate", which is valid for up to three years. The second phase is called "Nigeria National Standards Agency Mandatory Conformity Assessment Procedure Certification" (hereinafter referred to as SONCAP certification) and is applicable to a certain batch of pre-shipment cargo. The above two certifications are both handled at the SON Country Office of the Nigerian National Standards Agency.
The SONCAP certificate is a statutory mandatory document for controlling customs clearance procedures at Nigerian customs. The lack of a SONCAP certificate will cause delays in the clearance of controlled products or be denied entry into the Nigerian domestic market. It is important to note that SONCAP is applicable to regulated products and other import procedures prescribed by the Nigerian government are still valid.
